In 1990, Melanie and her husband, Sam, moved their original HAWKE facility from Anastasia Island to Elkton in order to relocate to an area better suited for housing and rehabilitating wildlife. They chose their site not only for its beautiful rural setting, but also because the property was located on the highest elevation in St Johns County and would not be prone to flooding.
HAWKE expanded the feed and ICU rooms, a combination wildlife care, examination, treatment and lab room that were specially designed to function not only for this purpose, but also as an emergency shelter. The room was constructed with poured cement with rebar set inside the concrete blocks and a flat, reinforced roof with additional safety measures to withstand strong winds. All our wildlife are brought into this room and placed inside kennels when storms threaten the area.
These rooms are also equipped with generator power to run the necessary refrigerators, freezers, and incubators to enable HAWKE to continue treating patients even after the storm has passed. The curators and wildlife are able to stay safe in their own facility and avoid having to be transported during extreme weather. Prior to 2004, these rooms were used twice; however, the unprecedented four hurricanes
brought to light some needed changes!
Melanie and Sam Stage lived in the hurricane wildlife shelter for 14 days during this past hurricane season. Their home was without power and phone service for over 13 days. From that experience, they learned that HAWKE
needed a permanent place to store all the supplies, such as bottled water, canned and dry people and animal food, flashlights, batteries, air mattresses, as well as extra medical supplies, raincoats, boots, and other items needed during major storms.
Thankfully, our great donors came to the rescue and we now
have the much needed storage area. Now, with
hurricane season coming upon us, we need to stock up!
With the prediction of more active hurricane seasons to come, we would like to start on this small addition and have it finished before the worst of the season begins. Please become a sponsor of this project or donate money towards this much needed cause.
