14th Annual Dinner for the Birds

HAWKE is blessed to have Lorna MacDonald, her family, and her staff host this annual event to show their support for wildlife rehabilitation. The award-winning Raintree Restaurant, one of North Florida’s finest restaurants and winner of a 2010 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, is in a century-old Victorian building that is one of the last survivors of a period of development that began in St. Augustine after the end of the Civil War. The New York Times once noted that, “(t)here should be special awards for restaurants that manage to combine quality food with historic surroundings, buildings that proudly proclaim their heritage and encourage diners in their own remembrance of things past.” This year, the Raintree will offer the following spectacular selection:
- Chilled Lobster Gazpacho Soup
- Mixed Baby Green Salad Served with Walnuts and Raspberry Vinaigrette
- Beef Roulade – with a spinach and four cheese stuffing, served with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables (a vegetarian entrée is available, advance notice required)
- Cappuccino Ice Cream Crepe - served with raspberry, chocolate, and almonds
- Complimentary tea or coffee and (a *cash bar available for alcoholic beverages ) not included in price
The dinner is limited to 55 guests and has historically sold out very quickly, so call 904-692-1777 to check on availability and to make reservations. The donation of $65.00 per person for HAWKE members includes gratuity and directly supports HAWKE’s mission of rescuing and caring for injured wildlife in our area. Non-members donation is $70 per person. Advance payment with reservations are required (no walk-up seating will be available) and a vegetarian dinner is available if requested with reservation. 23rd Annual Holiday Open House

Members and supporters of HAWKE are invited to come out and visit our location on Sunday, Nov. 20th for HAWKE’s 23rd Annual Holiday Open House. See otters play, take photos of our educational birds of prey on their perch display. Meet liberty the Red tailed hawk, Kenya the peregrine Falcon, Barney,Hedwig and Twiggy the owls, our just hatched baby box turtles and so much more. HAWKE is not open other times of the year, except spring and fall members open house. The injured and rehab patients will not be on display just the permanent adopt a critters and the facilities. Meet the president and volunteers of HAWKE enjoy drinks and goodies under the huge ancient oaks in rural Elkton. Have a guided tour of inside andthe outside facility. People who are current members, have donated services, or our volunteers do not have to join . Dine on the Wild Side to Benefit Wildlife

Ever dined next to a hungry gator or a nesting heron? announces their annual “Dine on the Wild Side” fund-raising dinner will be held at The St. Augustine Alligator Farm on Saturday evening, May 14th, 2011. The Alligator Farm and Zoological Park sponsors this popular event every year for HAWKE.The dinner will feature Jerry Stalvey’s BBQ chicken, coleslaw and baked beans. There are also limited tickets for a vegetarian dinner featuring tofu sautéed with vegetables and served over a bed of rice donated from the Gypsy Cab on Anastasia Island and a pasta dish donated by Jim’s Place in Elkton. All meals will be served with dessert, tea, and a roll. Also, beer and wine will be available for purchase by the Alligator Farm’s Snack Bar. Live music will be provided by Anastasia Spiecker, a St. Augustine native who has been performing around Northeast Florida since 1998. She has composed over fifty original songs and has an ever-growing, eclectic collection of cover songs she plays as well. Anastasia has shared the stage with many popular bands including John Mayer, Styx, Huey Lewis and the News, Foreigner and David Crosby and her music has been featured in two independent films. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy/Religion at Flagler College and surviving a bout with cancer, Anastasia is now working toward her Master’s in the exciting field of Music Therapy at Florida State University.
A ticket to the event includes an all-day pass to the Park and exclusive use of the Park beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Enjoy a guided tour of the bird rookery from the boardwalk and view thousands of birds in all stages of life, from courtship to nesting, and be sure to bring your camera for unique photographic opportunities. Also, during the event, a segment for the television show “Wildlife Nannies” featuring HAWKE President Melanie Stage, Hedwig ,Twiggy and Barney the owls will also be on display .
Discount advance tickets are on sale for only $35 for ages 12 & up, and $25 for kids 5 to 11 (admission for children 4 and under is free if they share an adult’s meal). Starting May 1st, the ticket price increases to $40 and a limited number of tickets for $45 may be available at the door (depending on availability). The Humane Association of Wildlife Care & Education, HAWKE, INC. ” Members Only” Open House. June 5th Sunday from 1 to 4 PM
The rehabilitation facility is only open to the HAWKE membership twice annually, during the spring and the fall member events. This spring’s open house will feature tours of the hospital/intensive care unit, the flight cages, the turtle ponds/humming bird garden, the main cages, and the river otter facility. While the wildlife being rehabilitated will not be on display, HAWKE celebrities adopt a critters such as Barney the Barred Owl, Liberty, the Red-Tailed Hawk, Hedwig the Great Horned Owl and Twiggy the screech owl , Kenya the Peregrine Falcon will make appearances on their perches inside, In addition, some of HAWKE’s resident mammals like our turtles and our otters will undoubtedly be showing off as well. HAWKE volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about capture and rehabilitation efforts as well as the experience of volunteering for the Association. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Association and we couldn’t have the successes we have without them” according to Ms. Cain-Stage who has been helping wildlife since 1979. HAWKE depends on donations and fund-raisers to care for hundreds of Wild BIrds ,Mammals and reptiles per year. There is no state or federal funding to help injured or orphaned wildlife. All donations are tax deductible.
This special invitation is for current members, people who have donated ads, money, services or supplies, (such as auction items) to HAWKE. Soft drinks and homemade goodies will be available. Although the event is limited to current members of HAWKE, if you’re not a member currently, you can join at the open house Just email or call ahead. Memberships are $25 per year for an individual membership or ($35 for couples and /or their children under 19 for a family membership.)Larger membership donations are appreciated. Members receive a bi-annual newsletter that discusses the activities during the year, a personal “thank-you” from the President, a picture of one of the animals helped by the contribution and invitations to members-only events such as the open house.
